Why the ukulele works so well for adults

Most instruments have a frustrating beginner phase — weeks or months before you can play anything that sounds like actual music. The ukulele largely skips this. With four strings and a small handful of chord shapes, complete beginners are playing recognisable songs within 15 minutes of picking one up.

Research on music and wellbeing consistently shows that active music-making — actually playing, not just listening — produces measurable improvements in mood, reduces stress hormones, and creates a strong sense of social connection when done in groups. The shared experience of being equally bad at something, and then equally surprised by what you can do, creates a particular kind of group warmth that is hard to replicate through other activities.

This is why the ukulele workshop format works so well both for individuals looking for a genuinely enjoyable social activity, and for organisations looking for team experiences that leave people feeling more connected to each other — not just slightly better acquainted.

    Frven Lim

Frven is the founder of The Ministry of Happier™ — a wellbeing platform working with organisations and individuals across Singapore, the UK, and internationally. He is a certified coach, speaker, and the creator of the HappierMusic programme, which brings ukulele-based music-making to corporate teams, care homes, and community groups.

His approach is grounded in the research on music, wellbeing, and human connection — and in the practical reality of facilitating rooms full of sceptical adults who have never touched an instrument before. Sessions are warm, structured, gently paced, and consistently surprising for participants who arrive expecting to be embarrassed and leave having genuinely enjoyed themselves.

Bringing a workshop to your team?

Private corporate ukulele workshops can be arranged for teams of 10 to 50 people in Singapore. They work well as team-building activities, off-site events, or wellbeing programme sessions — and produce the kind of shared experience that people still talk about months later.
